KATRINA ROSHAN
Kat Roshan, born Katrina Cheng Binti Roshan, is a 21-year-old singer-songwriter hailing from the vibrant city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Embracing her mixed heritage with a Malay father and Chinese mother, Kat’s music resonates with a fusion of cultures and emotions, reflecting her unique identity.
Kat’s connection with music started with the piano at the tender age of 5. She later expanded her repertoire to include the violin and guitar, showcasing her undeniable talent and versatility. Her remarkable gift of perfect pitch further enhances her musical expression. Under the mentorship of her former mathematics teacher, Stephen Kimber, Kat embarked on a musical path that would shape her future.At the age of 14, Kat was introduced to Chossy Pratama, an esteemed music producer and composer hailing from Jakarta. The collaboration led to the release of ‘Rasa’ on April 8, 2020, an enchanting creation that showcased her unique voice and style, followed by her first English single, ‘You’ on May 28, 2020. Recognizing her talent, Hitz FM named her ‘ Homegrown Artist of the Month’ in October 2020, solidifying her local music presence.
At the age of 15, she received a pivotal introduction to Mr. Ong Peng Chu, a renowned music producer and veteran in Malaysia’s music industry. This introduction marked the beginning of a mentorship that has shaped her musical journey since 2018.
In May 2021, Kat Roshan released her first EP, ‘My Demons’, a compilation of five tracks that delve into her personal emotions, life reflections and reflections during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Venturing across oceans, Kat embraced a transformative experience in California. Immersed in the creative atmosphere of Idyllwild Arts Academy, the top-performing arts school in the United States, she further honed her songwriting and performance skills while excelling in her academics.
The crescendo of her journey culminated with the release of her debut album, ‘Attachments’, on May 28, 2023. A testament to her artistic evolution, the album encompasses a wide range of musical genres, from soulful acoustic ballads to captivating electronic dance tracks. Notably, four tracks from the album were produced by Billboard #1 producer Richard Harris.
Partnering with Universal Music Malaysia for music distribution, Kat has released her latest single, ‘Going Crazy Wild’. This track is a result of collaboration with renowned South Korean producer Jeongwook ‘James’ Park, which features Kim Sujin, a Korean rapper under Mr Park’s label, MOT. This release marks another milestone in her musical journey.
The song ‘One Day From Today’, the English version of a Korean ballad also written and composed by Mr Park was subsequently released by Kat in the same year. A clip from the music video of ‘One Day From Today’ went viral on Tik Tok, garnering 2.8M plays.
The first quarter of 2024 heralded Kat’s foray into China with her performance at the ‘Hear Each Other Concert – Sounds of the South China Sea’ hosted by CCTV4, an arm of the China Media Group where she performed ‘Wau Bulan’, a Malaysian folk song and dance, and also a Mandarin song titled ‘Because of Love’ with her partners. Back home in Malaysia in June 2024, Kat was invited to perform a song which was a mashup of Malaysia’s and China’s traditional folk songs, ‘Rasa Sayang’ and ‘The Most Dazzling Folk Style’ at an event to mark Malaysia and China’s 50th diplomatic friendship anniversary. This year, Kat embraced her Malay roots and worked again with Chossy Pratama of Indonesia to release two Malay language songs, ‘Cinta Putih’ and ‘Ku Percaya’. Recently, she marked a new milestone with her first pop rap release, ‘I’m A Rebel’, a bilingual English-Malay track created in collaboration with Malay artist Asyraf Nasir. This track represents an exciting venture into a new genre, expanding Kat Roshan’s musical versatility.
Beyond her musical pursuits, Kat Roshan is a dedicated scholar. Currently based in London, she is pursuing a BSc in Criminology at University College London after having graduated with straight A grades from Idyllwild Arts Academy and completing the UCL Foundation course in humanities.
